On a beautiful Friday night, the Sounders Women had a lot to celebrate. They had the best attendance record in all of the W-League, with an average of 4400 fans per match. They have the top scorer in the Western conference in Veronica Perez(11 goals), who also leads in shots (37) taken. They have a solid cushion over the Colorado Rush to earn the second (and final) playoff spot, and this was their final home game. Their record is 4-2-1 on the season so far. This reboot of the Sounders Women has certainly been successful, even without the star power of the US Women’s National Team players. Alex Morgan was the only Olympian in attendance and she stayed to thank the crowd and sign autographs.
According to the Sounders Women press release, forward Lyndsey Patterson said after the game, “It’s just been amazing. You can’t put it into words how it makes you feel as a player and how it is to play in front of people like that and know how much they love you. You just want to play so well for them.”
The scoring started with a goal by Patterson (AKA Mighty Mouse). The play began at the top of the box by Veronica Perez, who slid a through ball to Sophie Reiser who in turn chipped the ball to the far post for Patterson to knock in. Just two minutes later, Mighty Mouse scored her second goal of the evening. Veronica Perez had the assist on that one.
In the 40th minute, the post started getting in the way. First the cross bar kept Perez from opening her tally sheet. A minute later Annie Sittauer dribbled through traffic and let loose with a fantastic low flying rocket that hit the far post. It would hinder the Sounders several times more throughout the game. The half ended with the Rave Green leading 2-0 over the second year Victoria Highlanders.
In the 52nd minute, Perez was pulled down about 10′ beyond the 18. She took the free kick, which went around the Highlander’s wall and into the upper V of the goal for her first score of the night. Nothin’ but net on that one. In the 71st minute, it was Veronica again, but this time with her left foot. She shot another long ball, and again hit the upper V of the goal. There was nothing for the Victoria keeper to do other than dig out the ball. The Sounders kept up the pressure, and in stoppage time Veronica found a racing Megan Manthey for the fifth and final goal of the game.
Next up for the Sounders, a trip to LA. They have a game against the Santa Clarita Blue Heat on Wednesday, the LA Strikers on Friday the 13th, and finish up with a game against the undefeated Pali Blues. You can follow along with the games on the radio, 1150AM KKNW (1150KKNW.com), where Jon Billings will be calling the games. According to the UNATION website, the LA Strikers game will be streamed live. If it truly is, then you should be able to find the game here, or at least be close. I will be in LA for the final two games, and will be doing a live game thread over on SounderAtHeart.com.
I want to take a moment here to say thanks to those fans that have gone out to the games, or followed along on the web. This team deserves to be watched and cheered for. They have put on quite a show this season. It has been a real pleasure to be involved with this team. I can’t wait to see what next year brings. I plan on being there, in the stands, how about you? Let’s grow the game, shall we?
