It’s Game Day

Sounders Women Goal Celebration

We have clinched the second place in the Western Division, which means that we will be facing the Pali Blues in another week to see who will move on to the four team playoffs in Ottawa. In the mean time, we have three final games to play to complete this season.  We will take on the Santa Clarita Blue Heat this evening at 7:00.  You can listen to the game on 1150AM KKNW.  If you are outside the Seattle listening area, you can catch the live stream through the Sounders Women website here.

This game, the Sounders Women will be missing three players.  Lyndsey Elston, Annie Sittauer and Brooke Gilbert.  Lyndsey and Annie will be joining up with the team for the final two games.  We do however, have Kelli Smith for the final three games.  That will help the back line immensely.

The Blue Heat are standing on 13 points this season.  Their previous two games ended in ties, one against the Colorado Rush (1-1) and one against the Colorado Rapids (4-4).  We beat the Blue Heat at Starfire 4-0 about two weeks ago.  That does not mean that they are an easy team however.  They were completing a three game road trip, and had tired legs.  The two players to watch are the Portuguese National Team captain Edite Fernandez and U-19 Portuguese National Team  forward Laura Luis.  They have combined for 11 of the Blue Heat’s 20 goals on the season.  They will certainly pose a threat to the Sounders back line.

Stephanie Cox and Kate Deines will continue to hold the back, along with Smitty and perhaps Lyndsey Johnson.  That experience and skill will surely come in handy on this long road trip.  Watch for scoring machine Veronica Perez to add to her tally sheet, as well as Lyndsey Patterson and Megan Manthey.  Perhaps this will be Kara Kuttler’s game to step up and score.

If you are on twitter, you can catch the highlights with @mrbonnell.  On Friday, I will be doing a live game thread from the game against the LA Strikers at  I will also be doing the game thread from the Pali game at 3:00 on Sunday.

  1. Curious, do you think we will see 4,000 fans at Starfire next year?

    • I guess it depends on the format of the team. If they are able to retain some of the nationals (for pay), then yes. If they stay in the semi-pro format, without the known players of the National team, then perhaps not. I sure hope they do though. I think the Sounders have shown that they are a great team even without the “stars” of the USWNT. The fans should be happy to fill Starfire again. I know I will be there. It’s a different crowd than the typical Sounders FC fan, so it’s hard to predict. But let’s not kid ourselves, it was the big names that drew the crowd. I’m hopeful.
